24/02/15 Bircham Park MSCP completed

More than just a car park, S333's Bircham Park MSCP is a hybrid building that combines two types of apparently contradictory operations: an office and retail building with the utility of a car park building to create a new compact typology. The building forms part of an entrance and visitor hub to Derriford Hospital delivering services, amenities and secure parking for 600 cars to 11,000 daily staff, patients and visitors.

The hillside topography drove the design, allowing easy access at multiple levels, minimising congestion, ‘hiding’ 6 storeys of parking in the valley, and creating active street frontage with a sunny public belvedere overlooking the valley. Levels are grouped together and shift in plan to create walkways, terraces and areas of shelter. A series of ‘landscape’ treatments screen the building; ivy, glass, a lattice of metal bars and a screen of pine logs - to create interest and to break up the scale.
