Project overview
As part of its ongoing relationship with the Municipality of Zaanstad, S333 initiated and ran a series of events, exploring urban strategies and development opportunities in the station area. The aim was to discover why the area had become an obstacle to urban development and then to implement a strategic urban framework that would allow development to occur.

S333 ran workshops at which a multi-disciplinary team of architects, urbanists, engineers, landscape architects, ecologists and economists analysed the station area at local, regional and national scales. Following the workshops, S333 coordinated a series of studies which explored areas east and west of the station, and within the station itself.

To help people visualise the options during consultation, S333 developed a 1:25,000 interactive model which allowed viewers to examine a series of ‘what if’ urban scenarios. S333 also documented the full process in a series of booklets.

After completion of the strategic urban framework, the Municipality commissioned S333 to develop the first stage of the area’s regeneration, turning the city’s former waste dump, which was right next to the station, into a new recreational park.
