Project overview
The building faces Jyväskylä’s Church Park, which during the summer is a thriving centre for the city’s cultural activities. S333’s project proposes a new building that embraces the park, drawing the public off the street, through the foyer and to the main auditorium, which is raised off the ground.
At first sight, it appears simply to be a large, transparent box containing three distinct buildings, supported by three different structures to meet the strict requirements for acoustic separation. But in fact, they are more closely connected than this suggests. A spiralling sequence of circulation spaces steps up through the building to connect the interior elements.
These circulation spaces are all different in terms of height, lighting and climate, and they enable a variety of chance meetings between music and art lovers.
The glass cladding has large movable panels that open in summer. At night, the glass facade reveals the complex spaces of the interior.
